Keough Effigy Mounds Land & Water Reserve

Keough Effigy Mounds is an amazing archaeological and natural site situated just outside Galena, IL and situated along the backwaters of the Mississippi River. The site features rugged hiking trails that bring visitors to the amazing cultural features found on the property. The site includes early lead mine diggings and Native American mounds, including the prize feature of the site, the only intact bear effigy mound in the  state of Illinois. The mounds are from the late woodland time period, approximatley 700-900 A.D. In addition the site features excellent birding opportunities due to its proximity to the Mississippi River and the sourrounding woodland acreage.
